API Keys

Connecting your own key, and exactly what RG AI does with it.

How it works

Paste your key in Settings → Models & Usage → pick a provider → Connect & verify key.
RG AI sends one real verification request to the provider to confirm the key is valid before saving it.
Once verified, the key is stored only in your browser's local storage - never on RG AI's servers.

What gets sent where

When you chat using your own key, your message goes to the provider you chose (e.g. Anthropic) using that key. RG AI's server relays the request but does not log or store the content of that conversation.

Key format examples (yours will differ):
Anthropic:  sk-ant-...
OpenAI:     sk-...
Google:     AIza...
DeepSeek:   sk-...

If verification fails

Invalid or expired key → you'll see the provider's real rejection reason, not a generic error.
Key needs a paid account → RG AI tells you that explicitly rather than a vague failure.
Network error → try again; nothing is saved until verification succeeds.

Warning: Never share your API key in a chat message or paste it anywhere except the Connect & verify field - RG AI's chat model has no special handling for detecting keys typed into a message.
